Why You Should Avoid Buying Cheap Front Doors

Are you thinking about installing a new front door and getting tempted by the cheaper models? It’s understandable. Home improvement can be an expensive business and saving money can be very appealing, however we’d have to recommend against it. You should seek out competitive prices, but cheaper is not always better when it comes to front doors. Here at Ecostar, we’ve been installing high-quality UPVC entry doors for years and picked up on a few things in that time. Here are several reasons why cheap front doors are not a good idea.

buying a front door

Reduced Security

Entry doors are a barrier between your home and the outside world, so they have to withstand unwanted intruders and severe weather alike. Cheaper front doors are made with lower-quality materials, so won’t be able to resist forced entry as well. The frame will be weaker and the locks easier to pick. Even if nothing unpleasant ever happens, you won’t get the same peace of mind, and your home will always feel insecure. And that’s without considering the potential harm a major storm might cause.

Higher Repair Bills

Because they’re made with lower-quality materials, cheap doors require more frequent repairs. One reason the up-front cost is so low is that the manufacturers have cut corners, so the locks will break, the hinges will need adjusting, the seals will become unaligned, the doorknob will degrade and more. The first minor fix might not seem like a big deal, but the repair costs will soon add up.

Cheap Front Doors Aren’t Energy Efficient

One of the key benefits of Ecostar doors is energy efficiency. Our doors, and by extension, most respectable front doors on the market, are designed to prevent heat loss. They help keep your home warm in the winter and cool during the summer.

Cheap front doors don’t do this. They see higher rates of heat transfer and as they degrade over time, become draughty too. When the weather gets colder, you’ll need your heating cranked up for longer to keep your house warm. Don’t buy a cheap front door if you want to take the edge off your energy bills.

Their Looks Won’t Last

This last point is more superficial, but it’s worth making. Cheap front doors aren’t as attractive as the more expensive types. Sure, you may have found an incredibly stylish and eye-catching one, but that won’t last. Once installed, it’ll be exposed to the elements, and the paint that looked so beautiful in the showroom will start to crack and peel. The colour will fade, and within a few months, your new door will look weather-beaten and sorry for itself. A lower price is a giveaway that the manufacturers only did the bare minimum to weatherproof a front door.

We fully appreciate that a lower price tag can be very appealing in the current climate, but we strongly recommend against buying a cheaper entry door. It’ll only be cheap in the short term and will eventually cost more than buying a higher-quality one.
