Here in Australia, stacker doors are a popular home installation. At Ecostar, we get a lot of enquiries about them and the benefits they bring. Whilst we certainly understand the appeal of stacker doors though, we feel like they’ve had their day. Stacker doors have a lot to recommend but they’ve been surpassed by alternatives. One such example is bifold doors.

What’s The Difference?

Unless you work with household improvements on a regular basis, you might be wondering what the difference is. Surely, one type of door is a lot like the next? Well, no. Stacker and bifold doors have similarities but they are two separate things. They both have wide glazing areas and usually lead onto patios or gardens, but they open differently. 

Stacker doors consist of separate panels that run along a track. Each panel moves behind its neighbour and “collects” it, before sliding behind the next until they reach a final fixed panel. Bifold doors also feature multiple panels, but they’re connected by hinges and fold up like an accordion. 

The Pros And Cons

But why exactly do we believe bifold doors are the superior option? For starters, they’re longer lasting. Our bifold doors are made with aluminium, a lightweight but incredibly durable metal with an exceptional lifespan. It’s strong enough to withstand unwanted intruders and severe weather alike. We have an unpredictable climate in this country, so keeping your home safe and dry is a must. 

Bifold doors are also more energy efficient. They’re designed to form a thermal barrier between your house and the outside world, which makes it easier to manage internal temperatures. This means you’ll need to use heating and cooling systems less to keep your living space comfortable, reducing your carbon footprint and energy bills at the same time. They also come fitted with double glazing as standard, which only improves their security and heat retention properties. 

In terms of aesthetics, we’d have to say bifold doors are the winners. Granted, stacker doors are stylish and eye-catching, but bifold doors surpass them. They have slimmer sightlines and more room for glass, which lets in additional light and brightens up your home. Plus, they take up less room and are more discrete. There’s also something inherently modern about their concertina folding style. Of course, this is a matter of personal preference, but we’ve always found bifold doors to be more attractive. 

With all this in mind, you can see why we prefer bifold doors. Stacker doors take up less space and might be the better option if you only have limited room, but in all other respects, bifold doors are the winners.
