DIY Double Glazing – Should You Do It Yourself?

At Ecostar, we provide many double glazing products for homes in Melbourne and Victoria. Double glazing is becoming a popular choice for homes in Australia because it offers many selling points. This includes keeping natural heat indoors and leaving cold air outside. Double glazing increases your home’s security because it is robust, meaning that intruders won’t be able to enter your home easily.

If you are looking at installing double glazing yourself, it will save plenty of time and money. This is an effective method because it is cost effective and ideal if you have experience in installing double glazing. However, installing the double glazing can be difficult, so Ecostar can do it for you.

One of the first things you have to do is to remove the old windows from the frames so the new ones can be put into place. This is a critical part of the installation because it has to be done carefully. If it is rushed or badly done, you will make a mess, making it harder for the new glazing to be fitted properly. You will need to unscrew the screws to ensure they are all clear.

Next, measure the size of the new windows and remove any debris, dirt, or sealant. This will ensure the new window will perform adequately. After you remove the dirt, measure it again to ensure the window will fit. The sill also needs to be prepared because it needs to be cut to fit the film space. It is easy for moisture to seep out the sill frame, which could look unsightly, so you will need to seal it up properly with superglue to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Once you have tightened the window sill, the window frame will need to be fitted to the opening. To do this, place it in the opening and tighten it to make sure it is watertight. As a result, cold air will not be able to enter your home. Then, install the double glazing in the window. Do this by removing the beading and giving the frame a clean to remove debris and dirt. Then,  lift the window into the wall space with the help of another person. If the window isn’t level, using plastic packers will help adjust the glazing into place. A spirit level could be used to keep the window straight and level. Then, place the double glazing into the housing until it fits snugly into the slot.

Once you have done this, put the beads back. As a result, your window will be fully watertight in the long run, so it is protected against tough conditions.

After you have put the beading back on, give the glass a clean so dust is removed, then seal the frame in the internal wall. Afterwards, install any trickle vents. The last thing to do if you want to finish the installation is to break off packers that are inside and outside, clean the frame with a damp cloth, and seal it up between the exterior walls. This will seal up your double glazing easily.

This is a  professional method of installing double glazing. However, there are other ways of getting insulation in your home. For example, for a cheap and affordable way, use window film insulation. This is a straightforward method that will give you privacy by using minimal tools in the process. Al you will need is scissors, a damp cloth, a spoon and a hairdryer.

The first thing you need to do before starting the installation is clean the window frame to remove dirt and grime.  Next, you will need to measure your frame to ensure it is the correct size. After you have measured it, cut your film to size and add an inch to allow more depth.

Next, put a double-sided tape around the film and leave it to settle, then peel the backing off the tape, being careful not to remove the tape itself. Run a spoon over the seal, which will smoothen it out. This will help the seal be more consistent around the outside of the film.

Cut the extra bits of the film that don’t need to be used, then run a hairdryer over it to smoothen the wrinkles. The film will increase your home’s insulation and protect your home.
