Ecostar Creates Australia’s First Double Glazing Apprenticeship
Ecostar Double Glazing has partnered with the Victorian Chamber of Commerce to create the first ever double glazing apprenticeship in Australia.
Ecostar’s Construction Project Manager Paul Woods is responsible for the innovative program which will commence in September 2018.
“Previous apprenticeships with the Victorian Chamber of Commerce have included a mix of skills with other trades such as carpentry,” Woods says. “This is the first specialised apprenticeship specifically for double glazing”.
“I’ve written an apprenticeship scheme from start to finish which is bespoke to our industry meaning a bespoke qualification for those who participate.”
Ecostar’s new site at Dandenong South will feature a special area for apprentices to hone their craft.
“At the new factory we’ve got a training pod so that when the apprentices come in they have a space to learn. Our apprenticeships are open to any age, as opposed to just targeting school leavers.”
The main goal of the apprenticeship is to ensure that participants who are successful have longevity in the industry.
“It’s not just about training people to be window installers. It’s about training them in every aspect of the industry,” Woods says.
“We want our apprenticeship to be wholistic so we will train people to be managers, to control their stock and to be aware of health and safety. Their training will allow them to move through the company and the industry so they can gradually climb the ladder.
“When they get to an age where they no longer want to do the physical side of the business, they can move into management, surveying or health and safety. Essentially, we want to start with the end in mind so if we do have an individual on the training program at 18-years-old, we want to give them the skillset to work in the industry until retirement, if they want to.”
