Case Study: When Cheap Alternatives Come At A Cost
Alan Hume first learned the benefits of double glazing in London in the early 90s. In 2006 he moved to Australia permanently and wanted to enjoy the same comfort in his Melbourne penthouse. Having been told that secondary glazing was as effective as uPVC double glazing, he tried a quick fix. A disappointing result lead him to Ecostar and he hasn’t looked back…
Alan Hume’s first experience of double glazing was in London in the early 90s. Having bought an apartment in Teddington in 1985 (which was built in 1875) Hume noticed that the windows had started to show their age. He investigated the possibility of double glazing with a local company and was surprised to hear that they could cater for unique shaped windows. He had all of the windows and frames replaced and loved the results.
Hume and his Australian wife decided to purchase a ‘holiday apartment’ in Melbourne’s South Yarra in 1994. After he retired from a large multi-national company in 2001, the couple divided their time between England and Australia before deciding to make Melbourne their permanent home in 2006. The single glazing in their Melbourne abode hadn’t bothered them so much when they were using the place as a holiday getaway only. But after making it home, they started to tire of the traffic noise which had increased significantly on Punt Rd in the time since they had bought the property. Alan decided to try secondary glazing as a quick fix but was disappointed with the result.
“We decided to get secondary glazing on the windows facing Punt Rd to reduce the noise. It just didn’t work. We knew we had to do a full replacement but when we started looking into local companies we quickly found out that Australian companies only offered bog standard windows and frames,” Hume said.
“It was then we saw an ad for Ecostar and had to do some persuading to get body corporate to allow us to replace the glass and frames. In the end they agreed and we were delighted with the results. Despite increased traffic the apartment was so much quieter. I’ve since recommended Ecostar to many friends and contacts.”
When the couple decided to sell their apartment in 2016, their double glazing ensured they had a point of difference over other apartments for sale at that time. Only three units in their complex were double glazed despite the proximity to Punt Rd. Having bought the penthouse from the plan for $440k, they sold it for more than $1.2 million.
“I’ve no doubt that our double glazing helped us to sell. As we had a penthouse there was a lot of windows, meaning a lot of traffic noise if we hadn’t had double glazing installed. As well as noise reduction, I know that potential buyers were also impressed by the added benefit of temperature control.”
